چکیده

In the past, angina has been considered something bad. Though I still maintain that any ischemia is something the heart should avoid if possible, several studies suggest that preinfarct angina paradoxically may have protective effects (1–7). Our group observed this phenomenon in the Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI-4) (1) study and then in the TIMI-9 study (2). Preinfarct angina reduced in-hospital death and congestive heart failure/shock and was associated with a smaller myocardial infarct size as measured by creatine kinase-MB fraction (CK-MB) release. In the second study, TIMI-9 (2), it appeared that for the benefit to be manifest, the preinfarct angina had to occur temporally close to the MI. Several other groups have observed benefits of preinfarct angina—ranging from a reduction in enzymatically determined myocardial infarct size to improved longterm survival, to improved left ventricular function, to reduction in arrhythmia (3–7). These studies were primarily ones in which myocardial infarcts were reperfused with

2877 Different Effects of Strenuous Exercise and Moderate Exercise on Platelet Function in Men

Background Platelets play an important role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. It is also noticed that on one hand, regular exercise can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and on the other hand, vigorous exercise provokes sudden cardiac death. We therefore hypothesize that various intensities of exercise may affect platelet function differently. Methods and Results Strenuo...

Combating adolescent obesity: an integrated physiological and psychological perspective

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Optimizing the approach to combat childhood obesity, we emphasize the importance of combining both biological and psychological knowledge. In such an approach, strength exercises might be an important aspect in the treatment and prevention of childhood obesity. RECENT FINDINGS Recent evidence indicates plausible effects of the role of resistance exercise in combating the neg...

Myocardium tolerant to an adenosine-dependent ischemic preconditioning stimulus can still be protected by stimuli that employ alternative signaling pathways.

Clinical studies on cardioprotection by preinfarct angina are ambiguous, which may involve development of tolerance to repeated episodes of ischemia. Not all preconditioning stimuli use identical signaling pathways, and because patients likely experience varying numbers of episodes of preinfarct angina of different degrees and durations, it is important to know whether myocardium tolerant to a ...

Comparison of Orientations to Activities on Exercise Self-efficacy and Indices of Well-being among Physically-motion Disables

This study examined the comparison of exercise self-efficacy and indices of well-being based on different orientations to activities among physically-motion disables and veterans. 123 physically-motion disables and veterans filled the questionnaires of exercise self-efficacy, hedonia and eudemonia motives for activities, positive and negative affect and subjective vitality. The results showed t...
